About this tour
Two hours from Medellín sits the most colourful town in Colombia: Guatapé, with its hand-painted zócalos, its waterfront on the reservoir, and the towering Piedra del Peñol — a 220-metre monolith you conquer by climbing 740 steps to one of the most spectacular views in South America: a maze of green water and islands stretching to the horizon.
Our tour is private and takes the whole day. We leave your accommodation in the morning, stop at the viewpoints along the road, you climb the rock at your own rhythm, have lunch in town (trout and bandeja paisa are the classics) and wander the umbrella street and the main square without a group timetable pushing you. You can add a boat ride on the reservoir, a helicopter flight or a chiva bike — we arrange it.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Medellín to Guatapé?
Between 1.5 and 2.5 hours each way depending on traffic leaving the city. Sunday and holiday afternoons are the slowest for the return leg.
What time is pickup, and when are we back?
We suggest leaving your accommodation between 7 and 8 a.m.; you are back in Medellín in the late afternoon, 8 to 10 hours in total. You choose the departure time.
How is this different from the bus or a group tour?
By bus you first get to the Terminal del Norte, ride 2 to 2.5 hours each way and then get around Guatapé on your own between the rock and the town. A group tour picks everyone up and runs on a fixed schedule. With us you are picked up at your hotel, the car is only for your group and you set the order of the day.
How many steps does the Piedra del Peñol have?
740 steps to the top viewpoint. There is no lift. Most people take 20 to 30 minutes going up slowly, and there are drink stands along the way.
What does the tour include?
USD $200 (about $650,000 COP) covers the private vehicle for up to 4 people, the driver and the whole day. The entrance ticket to the rock, lunch and any optional boat or helicopter ride are paid separately on site.
Is the Piedra del Peñol the same as the Rock of Guatapé?
Yes. La Piedra del Peñol, El Peñol rock and the Rock of Guatapé are the same 220-metre monolith, a few minutes from the town of Guatapé. The day trip covers both: the rock and the painted town.
Can I skip climbing the rock?
Absolutely. Many travellers stay at the base, where there are cafés and viewpoints, or spend that time in town. The day still works.

How do I pay? Is there a deposit?
You hold any service with a 30% deposit and pay the rest at the end of the service, in cash, by credit card or by bank transfer (Nequi, Bancolombia), in Colombian pesos. If you are outside Colombia, you can pay the deposit by credit card. We send you the deposit details on WhatsApp when we confirm.
Does the driver speak English?
Our drivers are native Spanish speakers who handle conversational English for the key points of the route. If you want a fully bilingual guide, tell us when booking and we arrange one.
How far ahead should I book?
As soon as you have your dates. In high season (December and January, Holy Week and the Flower Festival in August) message us several days ahead; the rest of the year, write to us even if it is for tomorrow and we will tell you if there is availability.
What if we are more than 4?
The car, a Renault Sandero, comfortably carries 4 passengers. For larger groups we arrange a second vehicle with its own driver.
Can I change the date or cancel?
Yes. Moving the date or cancelling is just a WhatsApp message; we only ask for as much notice as you can give.
